Week 7: Refining Meme Research

I will be conducting research on memes stemming from the September 27, 2018 trial involving Brett Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. This research will focus on the theme of gender, specifically how memes from the trial highlight women stereotypes present in our society and the messages conveyed about gender roles in response to sexual assault. In order to conduct this research, I will explore how women are being framed and talked about in memes from the trial.

My proposed research question is: What messages do memes from the Brett Kavanaugh trial tell us about gender expectations and stereotypes present in today's society?

In order to answer my proposed research question,  I will study 10 internet memes from Brett Kavanaugh's trial that relate to my chosen theme of gender. The memes will be selected from the following criteria: from the September 27th trial, include images of women or Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, include images of Brett Kavanaugh, and text referencing women and/or gender.

The two memes below are examples of memes I will be collecting in my research:
1) Too Emotional

This meme shows images of three men in politics who are publicly displaying their anger and frustration. The text of this meme conveys the message that women being "too emotional" for politics isn't true, because the men currently in these roles are actually very emotional.

2) Ford vs. Kavanaugh

This meme highlights the societal expectations of women and how they are radically different than what is expected and allowed from men. The different dispositions of Dr. Ford and Kavanaugh in the images, paired with the text, shows that society accepts such behavior from men without question, whereas women would be ridiculed for acting that way.
